It foil to my lot to arrange the details of these sales and to sell the plants. We never had any sales that aroused so much popular enthusiasm. I grew fond of the representatives of these Holland firms; they were line fellows, with whom it was a pleasure to do business. They sent us invoices containing an exact list of the number of cases of rose plants and just how many bushes there were in each case. The bushes were tied in bundles of ten, eacli bundle containing the cor- rect name of the variety, clearly la- beled. The packing and invoicing were so carefully done that we had no diffi- culty with the varieties. "The method of selling was to take each variety separately, and to offer to the highest bidder all of that variety, or as many as he or she desired. The excitement sometimes grew so great that choice varieties, such as the Lyon rose, of which there would be only five bundles, or fifty plants, were bid up on one occasion as high as $1 each.
