The exterior of the Ermita de Betlem in the hills to the northwest of the town of Arta. It is approached by an avenue of cypress trees. The present building dates from 1804 when it was rebuilt to replace a church destroyed by pirates. The resulting monastery was a self- sufficient community. It is a fairly simple building when compared to other religious buildings on the island. The last monks went into retirement in 2010. The route up to the Ermita, high up in the hills, is very popular with cyclists, being a catagory 3 climb.
