C. Perry: The undersigned, ambassadors of the Emperor of Japan, have perusedand understood the letter of the Lord Admiral, and in reply may remark : The Lord Admiral is right in going up to Yedo, to be received thereaccording to the custom in Europe and America. According to the Japan-ese custom ambassadors are commissioned, and a building erected, for thereception of ambassadors from foreign countries in a friendly manner, andwith high consideration. The Emperor has sent us to Uraga to receive the Admiral with the. TEZAIMAN PROPOSES YOKU-HAMA 393 highest honor, and to extend the Japanese hospitality towards him, and havethe interview at that place in compliance with the order of the Emperor, regardless of the customs of foreign countries. We wish this to be well understood : we desire the Admiral to come toUraga, there to have the interview with us in the building aforesaid, andwould gratefully acknowledge the friendly meeting of the Lord Admiral incomplying with this order of the Emperor, and our own wishes.
