The inscription on this black marble obelisk, uncovered in Nimrud (ancient Kalhu) dates to Shalamaneser III (ninth century )


The inscription engraved on a black marble obelisk that measures five feet in height was carved in the time of Shalamaneser III, who ruled Assyria in the nineth century The obelisk was uncovered in 1846 in Nimrud (ancient Kalhu) , just south of Baghdad in present-day Iraq. On each of its four sides is written the tribute brought to Shalamaneser by vassal princes. The side pictured here is believed to record the tribute brought by Jebu of Israel.
