At a banquet,Michel Steno, a young patrician, grosslyinsulted some of the ladies, and was, bythe order of the doge, turned out of thehouse. In revenge, Steno placarded thedoges chair with some scurrilous versesupon the young dogaressa, and Faliero re-ferred the matter to the Forty. Thecouncil sentenced Steno to two monthsimprisonment, and the doge deemed thispunishment so inadequate to the offence, that he looked upon it as a personal in-sult, and headed a conspiracy to cut off, root and branch, the whole Venetian nobil-ity.
