Sony Center, Berlin, 1993-2000. Detail of sunshading sails in glass ceiling. Architect: Murphy, Jahn

The Sony Center was opened on 14 June 2000. The Potsdamer Platz was one of the liveliest traffic junctions of Berlin in the co-called Golden Twenties. Until 1989 the square was divided by the Berlin Wall, the symbol of division between East and West Berlin. A new modern focal point has been created here by companies such as Debis and Sony. transparent complex of light architecture integrating historic parts. The former Grand Hotel Esplanade built between 1908-1911 and once a meeting point for guests like Greta Garbo and Charlie Chaplin was integrated into the new center. The two-storey Kaisersaal of the luxury hotel weighing 1,300 tonnes was lifted onto air cushions to enable it to glide 75 metres to its new location. The Sony Center is an ensemble of office buildings, cinemas, supermarkets, restaurants and shops.
