It stands immediately upon the shoreof the Mediterranean, whose waves wash its walls. It lies upona rounded hill, which slopes towards the sea on the western side,and is encompassed on the land side by groves of oranges,lemons, citrons, and apricots, which are unsurpassed and scarcelyequalled by any in the world. From a distance it presents amassive and commanding appearance, but upon approaching itone finds that the houses are crowded close together; that the (352). 23 (353) 354 AROUND THE WORLD. streets are narrow, crooked, dark, and dirty. The houses arebuilt along the sides of the steep hill, as if each were trying tocrowd the others towards the top, on which sits the castle look-ing down over the entire city. The houses seem terribly ricketyto one from over the sea, and it is hard to resist the impressionthat if one of them should break loose it would send the wholemass sliding down into the sea. Around the town runs a strongwall, pierced with two gates only—one towards the plain, andthe other overlooking the harbor. A few old guns aremounted on the rampart facing the sea. The castle, though im-posing in appearance, would offer but a feeble resistance to awell-planned attack. In spite of its dirt, in spite of its hot, close crowded houses,Jaffa is a busy place.
