Carl Ritter (1779-1859). 1869 engraving of the German geographer Carl Ritter. Ritter is best known for founding the scientific approach to his subject. He was a professor at Berlin University and argued for the application of all sciences in the study of geography. His classic book Die Erkunde (Earth Sciences) was published in 19 parts between 1817 and 1859, and focused on how the physical environment affected human behaviour.
