BURPEE'S WHITE GEM WATERMELON. BURPEE'S WHITE GEM. The vines are of very luxuriant t;ro\vth and enormously productive. Our crops have been the admiration of many visitors, who remarked that they never saw watermelons so white and handsome, or so thirkfi/ covering the ground. The melons are perfectly round in shape, of good average size for family use, weighing tifteen to twenty pounds each, of a beautiful cream-white color when ripe, only faintly striped with very light-gjreen niark- M-r-i^ longitudinally. The skin is so tough I VAWj that a melon fully ripe will support a man \lfj'-// without even cracking the flesh—this, not- ^ withstanding that the rind is only a scant half-inch in thickness. In a cut melon the beautiful flesh seems almost to touch the skin. The flesh is a rich, bright pink, crisp, melting, very juicy, and deli- ciously sweet in flavor. Several good judges of melons, who have tested it at our farm, pronounced it sweeter even than the Hungarian Honey, which has been con- sidered the acme of perfection.
