This didnot please Crom-well, but finally, in1643, a treaty wasdrawn up called the Solemn Leagueand Covenant, and an alliance was formed. Cromwell and the Scots now met the royalist armyunder Prince Rupert, the nephew of the king, at MarstonMoor in 1644. Cromwells Ironsides charged on Rupertscavalry; thoy crumbled them to pieces and scattered them, asCromwell said, like a little dust. But Cromwell did notpursue. Wheeling about, he promptly charged the royalistinfantry, with a like result. The north of England wasconquered. Elsewhere Charles was winning Battles of the Civil War 172 HISTORY OF ENGLAND [1645-46 Cromwell, as a member of Parliament, now attacked theweak spot in the parliamentary army. He felt that thearmy was badly organized and that some of the commanderswere really not anxious to destroy utterly the power of theking. A Self-denying Ordinance was introduced in 1645,which provided that members of Parliament should resigntheir offices in the army; the effect of this ordinance was toremove from their commands several of the chief leaders ofthe parliament aiy army. Sir Thomas Fairfax was madegeneral, and Cromwell, in spite of the ordinance, becamelieutenant-general. Hampden had been killed a short timebefore in an obscure skirmish at Chalgrove Field.
