Inside, on its raised floor or dais,there were the historic table and silver inkstand used by theQueen when she signed the Imperial Commonwealth was again to render service in the ceremonial developmentof the nation. The gilded chairs were grouped about it, butonly one was used on the day, as the Governor-General alonesat down during the progress of the ceremony. High abovethe table green garlands were swung from one arched en-trance to another ; below it, just visibly projecting over theline of the dais, was a massive polished block of Moruyagranite, having mixed markings of grey and red. Round the buildini^- a gardenwas tastefully laid out. The steps of the pavilion wereheavily carpeted in red, and from the northern or main archthe carpet was stretched along- the sward to intercept thecarriag-e-way at the spot where the guests would alight fromtheir carriages in the procession. A special reserve was setapart opposite the southern archwa} for representatives ofthe newspaper press, and a photographers gallery waserected in an approxed position. Meanwhile the hills and the basin of the amphitheatrewere holding an ever-increasing burden, and showed a kaleido-scopic picture of human life that would have warmed theheart of a misanthrope and inspired with fear the least dis-loyal br
