This condition, however, was attachedto the gift, that he was not to communicate his revelations ofthe future by words as did Apollo, but by signs and occur-rences. That is to say, that persons revolving some under-taking in their mind were to be guided by certain unexpectedsights, accidents, or incidents, and were to recognize in themthe favour or displeasure of the gods with reference .to theenterprise in question,—a method of proceeding commonenough in modern superstition. These signs and incidentswere believed to be sent by Hermes, whose counsel in othercases of doubt, as to whether to do or not do a thing, wassought for by recourse to dice, the belief being that a highthrow signified his approval, and a low throw the reverse. The cunning and adroitness, the same good humour andready answer which he gave proof of in the first days of hisinfancy, were often afterwards and with like success displayedby him—^as, for example, when he stole the sceptre of Zeus, xr Hepliaestos, or Vulcan.
