Though Columbus had found a new worldhe had no comprehension of what he had done. In his owneyes he had merely visited islands off the coast of therefore named his discoveries, the Indies. We knowto-day that he had visited the Bahama Islands and cruisedalong the shores of Cuba and Hayti. Curiously enough,. Probably it was what wenow call Watling Island. 19. America and the Fortune Hunters. The news broughthome by Columbus made an immense sensation. At oncebold adventurers turned westward to make their needy gentleman of Spain began to dream of goldencities waiting to be plundered by Europeans. There followed 12 AMERICAN HISTORY a succession of exploits, so daring that they take away onesbreath, and so fruitful in plunder that the Spaniards passed,at one step, from the poorest to the richest of Europeanpeoples. Columbus himself did not share in this vast but ill-gottenwealth. Though he made three more voyages, he neverfound the way to the rich parts of America. He died in 1506,poor and disappointed, unaware that his Indies were not apart of Asia. Soon, however, the Spaniards began to find what theysought.
