He designed this apparatus to safely administer ether to the patients during surgical and obstetric procedures. The apparatus is a vaporizer consisting of a rectangular metal hot water bath, spiral baffle in a vaporizing chamber, valves, wide bore tubing and facepiece through which the patient inhales the anaesthetic ether vapour.
