Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), German philosopher. Schopenhauer's ideas about evolution anticipated Charles Darwin's, but without the latter's detailed evidence. Schopenhauer believed in the presence of a will or psychological cause for all conscious and unconscious actions. This will drives individuals to achieve successive goals, but that the achievement of any one goal only brings temporary satisfaction.
