Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860), German philosopher. Schopenhauer's ideas about evolution anticipated Charles Darwin's, but without the latter's detailed evidence. Schopenhauer believed in the presence of a will or psychological cause for all conscious and unconscious actions. This will drives individuals to achieve successive goals, but that the achievement of any one goal only brings temporary satisfaction. Amongst these goals is sex, driven by an irrational desire to create descendants.
