Fine Antique Japanese Sharkskin Glazed ‘Squirrel and Grapes’ Vase by Takeuchi Chubei. Meiji Period

Very beautiful blue-ground porcelain vase by Meiji artist Takeuchi Chubei decorated in unusual textured ‘sharkskin’ glaze (鮫肌釉). Depicting an auspicious scene with a squirrel among grapevines. The combination of squirrels and grapes is a popular visual rebus in both Chinese and Japanese art and its meaning can be metaphorically translated as a wish for ‘abundance in fortune and offspring’.
