Artificial hip. Second of two images. X-ray of an artificial (prosthetic) hip joint in a 60 year-old female patient. The hip bone (upper right) and the top of the thigh bone (femur, lower left) are seen. At centre the artificial ball and shaft at the head of the femur are clearly seen. Stitching on the operating wound is also visible (at upper left). Prosthetic hip joints are used to replace joints that have become stiff and painful as a result of arthritis. During a hip replacement the ball at the end of the thigh bone is cut off & its rounded socket in the pelvis is enlarged. Metal components are then cemented in place of the damaged bone. See M110/377 for pre-operative image.
