Building a railroad; a handbook devoted to a new, speedy and economical method of performing every operation from grading right-of-way to ballasting and maintaining track . e track, the American can beset out on the side the same as a steam shovel. Tem-porary track can l)e laid, or the ]:)ortaf:)le track sec-tions can be used. General Remarks The American may be down on the standardgauge surface track, and be very speedily and easilyset out onto the portable rail or track sections, with-out cutting or molesting the permanent track. To do this, first remove ties from the widest ofthe portable track sections if there are any spiked toit, and place the rails so the chamfered ends restlightly under the widest tread of the double-flangedwheels. Let this track section bear off slightly to theright or left, in the direction the machine is to go,resting on the permanent rail at the machine andbeing blocked up at the outer end to make machine mounts the track section, one rail will bedirectly under the double tread wheel on one side, and the rail on opposite side will be 8 or 10 inchesfrom the truck wheel. This will throw the end of 24 Building a Railroad. ginning to Mount Foriahle TrackSe-lion machine around inwhich you wish section farthest frommacliine about 2 ft. tothe right or left of ahne parallel with thesurface track. The dou-ble tread wheels being2 inches above thepermanent track level, are high enough tomount the chamferedends of the portablerails. Now turn theshovel or boom end ofthe opposite direction fromto tra\el, picking up ashovelful of earth, if convenient. This additionalweight tends to make opposite end of machine lighterso it will easily mount the portable track the travelling gear in lightly and the wheelsin contact with portable track section will quicklymount same. Now turn boom around in directionin which machine is to travel, which makes the rearend lighter, and the wheels under the rear of machinewill mount the track section,
