His Blood Helped Pay for Tarawa. At Tarawa, Coast Guardsmen bring a wounded Marine aboard their transport. The Marine, removed from the beachhead as the battle raged, was one of the casualties that made Tarawa so costley a victory. Note the hunting knife on the belt of the Coast Guardsman in the center.
