No. 37. 2F STEWART, EARL OF CARRICK OHN STEWART, after-wards King of Scotland,under the title of RobertIII., was the eldest sonof Robert ii. by his wifeElizabeth More, and wasbom about 1337. On 22June 1368 he had a grantof the earldom of Oarrickto himself and his wifeAnnabella Drummond,and sat under the titleEARL OP OARRICK inthe Parliament at Perth23 October 1370. Sub-sequent to his fathersaccession to the thronehe obtained, 1 June 1374, a new charter of the earldomto himself and his wife Annabella in liferent and to thesons procreated or to be procreated between them infee. He succeeded his father as King 19 April 1390, andthe title again merged in the Crown. (iSee title Kings ofScotland.). David Stewart, eldest son of King Robert iii., was born24 October 1378; he was probably created EARL OFCARRICK sliortly after his fathers succession to thethrone, as he is styled Comes de Carrick in a charterto Sir David Lindsay of Glenesk 2 January 1390-91.^ He 1 Acta Pari. STEWART, EARL OF OARRIOK 439 was subsequently (28 April 1398) created DUKE OPROTHESAY, and, 28 April 1398, got the earldom ofAtlioU by charter from his father on 6 September in thatyear. He married, in 1400, Mary, daughter of Archibald,third Earl of Douglas, and died without issue 26 March1402. (See title Rothesay.) James Stewart, third, but first surviving, son of Robert had a charter from his father on 10 December 1404 ofthe earldom of Carrick
