Chenobyl, School, Ukraine: This long deserted school was once an integral part of the community in Chernobyl. Although trees have grown up around the place, there was no birdsong. The place was strangely silent. Ramshackled with a picure of Lenin on the floor, the whole area was rapidly evacuated in May 1986, just after the fateful accident that occured just a few kilometres away. I was told that the birds that still remain get cateracts and die. Chernobyl was the biggest single contributing factor to the end of the cold war. The economic impact was staggering.
