Timothy Rowe, US palaeontologist, holding a model of an elephant bird (Aepyornis sp.) egg. Rowe is Professor of Geological Sciences at the University of Texas in Austin, USA. His main research focuses on the evolution of the vertebrate skeleton. His research involves the use of a high-resolution X-ray computed tomography (CT) scanner (seen here behind Rowe) that can fire multiple beams of X-rays at large fossils. The resulting data is composed by computer into a 3-D model (such as the Aepyornis egg) with details of external and internal structures. The 3-D models are used by Rowe and his researchers to compare the anatomy between extinct and living vertebrates. Photographed in 2007.
