The state colleges of agriculture and mechanic arts wereestablished under the Morrill Act of 1862, which set asidelarge tracts of land from the public domain for their main-tenance. This was further strengthened by a second actin 1890 which provided liberal financial assistance to theland-grant colleges, as these schools are now called. Muchof the Federal aid has gone for extension work. The statecolleges of agriculture are organized for three main purposes :teaching, research, and extension. The first is a naturalfunction of all schools of this class.
