Stricken Japanese fishing boat "Eihatsu Maru" runs aground in Clifton, Cape Town

A Japanese fishing trawler Eihatsu Maru runs aground on Clifton Beach, Cape Town, South Africa on Saturday, 12th May 2012 at 06h15 in heavy fog. While 19 of the 28 Taiwanese crew were rescued by the NSRI, 9 crew including the captain and his dog remain on board. This is in accordance with Maritime Law. Investigations are under way into the cause of the ships grounding. All attempts to tow the 50 meter boat back out to sea have failed so far. There have been two failed attempts to tow the boat when the rope snapped and one of the attempts had to be postponed due to rough seas. The ship is still grounded and the situation has been elevated to national disaster. In the distance one can see the tugboat that attempted to pull the stricken ship back out to sea.
