He cannotexplain it, but we believe that it may be nothing less than amuch corrupted survival of the sacred lotus held by Buddhistimages. In photographs of carvings at Bharahat and alsoat Boro Budor, the Buddhas and their attendants appearto hold just such short staves, really the rubbery stem, sur-mounted by the lotus-flower, out of which seems to issue insome instances a kind of face.
