One large lug is the only sail carried, but six oars can be used when necessary. These boats are wonderfully handled by the fishermen, and go long distances to sea; but, good as they may be, they are hardly fit to contend with the very bad weather so frequent there in winter. They are called " haaf" or deep-sea .SnETLANn Yawl. A smaller class of boats of the same description, but usually carrying only three men, is used for tlie saithe fishery inshore. On some parts of the west coast, cod and ling are fished for near the land in February and March, but this fishery is only a partial one, and many of the fish then caught are very small. A few haddocks are also.
