This great king wasthe son Alfonso IX, King of Leon,and of Berengaria, daughter ofAlfonso III, of Castile. Berengaria,like her saintly sister Blanche,mother of St. Louis IX, was mostsolicitous for the eternal welfareof her children. Rulers are exposedto many and great dangers, and onthem depends to a great degree thehappiness of their subjects.
