Joseph Ames (1689-1759), English antiquarian, with a collection of his books. Ames was a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (1736), Secretary of the Society of Antiquaries (from 1741), and a Fellow of the Royal Society (1743). His methods were criticised by his contemporaries. Among the items collected by Ames were coins, portraits, and antiquities. His published works include 'A Catalogue of English Printers' (1739-40), 'A Catalogue of English Heads' (1748), the 600-page 'Typographical Antiquities' (1749), and 'Parentalia' (1750). The latter was a memoir of the Wren family. Artwork from the 1785-90 edition of 'Typographical antiquities'.
