Harbor lies outside lofty palisade which protects small town of Viminacium (modern Kostolatz in Serbia), which was headquarters of 7th Claudian legion. View continues in bottom frame, two more boats laden with bales and barrels are riding at anchor. From gate of town Roman army is seen marching out over a bridge of boats. Bridge divided into two parts by island. Sterns of boats face spectator. In cave beneath city river god of Danube has raised his head and shoulders above waters. Part of Roman army already on enemy’s bank. Emperor, in full general’s uniform, pointing out way to victory. At end of bridge, another general, in same uniform as emperor, is on point of landing, attended by two trumpeters and bearers of praetorian standards, surmounted by a figure of Victory. Trumpeters and standard-bearers all wear bearskins fastened over head and shoulders. On bridge leading from mainland to island is another general in full uniform attended by legionary eagles, ordinary standards of maniples, and cavalry flag. These are followed by legionary soldiers who in addition to their ordinary armor, carry bundles of baggage slung from their spear-heads and march with bare hands, keeping their helmets hanging by a strap from their right shoulders.
