He thenplaces water-boshes M M, of cast or wrought iron, all round the furnace, except at the front, wherethere is a door E, as is usual in cupola furnaces, or a dam, as in blast furnaces. These boshes areset back 4^ in. from the face of the furnace inside, to allow of a thickness of lining G of e then places another tier of water-boshes N above those just described ; these upper boshes goall round the furnace, or on all four sides.
