Padlocked lock paddles at Bulbourne, Grand Union Canal, UK

In early 2012, British Waterways took the decision to close a part of the Grand Union Canal (known as "Tring Summit") due to lack of water caused by the lower than average rainfall in the previous year. It was closed at very short notice and the "stoppage" is expected to remain in place until March 2012, with a review in February 2012. The rationale behind the closure is to preserve water stocks in the nearby reservoirs for that summers cruising season, but has caused consternation among some canal boat owners and canal associated businesses in the area affected. This closure, together with an unrelated lock closure on the Thames (at Chertsey) has cut the Southern part of the canal network off with the North, trapping boats either side of the closures.
