The following yearhe established a furniture and carpet business onthe corner of Eleventh and Broadway and aftercontinuing there for twelve years, he located onthe corner of Thirteenth and Broadway, andfinally erected a handsome three-story build-ing for the accommodation of his established his business in this block onTwelfth street, placed a large and well-selectedstock of furniture, carpets and other householdfixtures and engaged actively in business untilhis death, which occurred in 1896. He had alsobuilt a two-story warehouse in 1893, intended for. HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD. the storage of furniture, carpets, etc., and inother ways had added materially to the progressof the city. By his close attention to business,his fair dealing and honest methods he won thecontinued friendship of his patrons and be-queathed to his sons a lucrative business. In 1858 Mr. Hook was united in marriage withMiss Nannie P. Henderson, of Santa Claracounty, Cal., and they became the parents of thefollowing children: William P., now presidentof the firm of Hook Brothers Company; Mary ; and Henry P. Elijah Hook was a stanchadvocate of Republican principles, was a manwell versed on all current topics, and took anactive part in the upbuilding and development ofthe city of Oakland.
