Porto Rico was captured without opposition. A fleet entered Manila Bay, Philippine Islands, and sunk the Span-ish war vessels there. The Spanish force in the islands capitulated a fewdays afterward. A treaty of peace was signed in Paris in December, 1898. The territory of the United States was enlarged by (1) the HawaiianIslands, annexed by treaty; (2) Porto Rico and the Philippine Islands,conquests of war; (3) the island of Guam, purchased from Spain.
