Gournia is the site of a Minoan palace excavated in the early 20th century by the American archaeologist, Harriet Boyd-Hawes. Crete was once the center of the Minoan civilization (c. 2700–1420 BC), which is currently regarded as the earliest recorded civilization in Europe
