Other parts of India, , Madras, Bombay, Cen-tral Provinces, have also some means of artificially watering the growingcrops. The whole of the larger and more important works of irrigationhave come into being under British rule. Too much praise cannotbe bestowed on the Government of India for the marvellous irrigationworks that have been constructed during the last 25 Lifting water by means of baskets. There are three great classes of irrigation works: (1) Lifts, (2)storage, (3) river. These are represented by wells, tanks, reservoirs,and canals. Purely lift irrigation works are of a minor character, andLift. are not owned, or maintained, by the State. Private enterprise in well construction is extensively encouragedby agricultural loans, and by a liberal land assessment. The numberof wells has very largely increased during the last few years, especiallyin Madras, owing to the expansion of the cultivation of Cambodiacotton. There is also a large increase in the United Provinces. Tanks, or storage works, differ considerably in size,Tanks. ranging from great lakes, formed by the construction of dams across the beds of rivers which flow irregularly, tothe small village tank, or reservoir, to be found near almost every villagein southern India.
