Elevated view of the Roman Theatre of Volterra (1st century BC), Pisa, Tuscany, Italy

The Roman Theatre of Volterra was brought to light in the fifties by archaeological excavations conducted in the district of Vallebuona by Enrico Fiumi, historian of Volterra. The monument is dated to the end of the first century and its construction was financed by the rich Volterra family of Caecina: during the excavations were found several seats, made of local limestone, with the various names of the representatives of the most influential families of Roman Volterra, such as, in fact, the Caecinae, the Persii and the Laelii. The capacity of the theater had to be around 3500 spectators, given its size (diameter of 60 meters by 24 steps).
