An apsara dancer as a deveta within the Angkor Wat temple, Cambodia
Angkor Wat means “City Temple”. It is the most famous temple at the complex of over 287 temples within 400 square kilometres. The temple is built to look like Mount Meru of Hindu mythology. It also has galleries and is the best preserved temple in the complex, with a great deal of renovation work done on it. The temple was built for King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century, originally a Hindu temple, now Buddhist. At the centre of the temple stands a quincunx of towers, with many reliefs on the walls depicting legendary events, as well as the numerous carvings of apsara dancers that can be found all across the site. The first name of the temple was Preah Pisnulok. At dawn the site is visited by thousands of tourists each day.
