Lucca, Tuscany, Italy: The battlemented bell tower or campanile of the Chiesa San Frediano, begun in about 1147, was built up over the centuries, with its Romanesque mullioned windows with two, three and four lights, added in the 13th century. The number of lights increases as they ascend to the summit. The campanile, restored in 1853, stands close to the city walls and was sometimes used as a defence tower. The church, one of the oldest in Lucca, was built between 1112 and 1147 on the site of a 7th century Lombardic basilica. Its best known treasures are the Fonte Lustrale, a 12th century baptismal font sculpted with Romanesque carvings by three different craftsmen, and the massive golden 13th century Byzantine-style Ascension of Christ the Saviour mosaic, by the workshop of Berlinghiero Berlinghieri, that decorates the facade.
