Riggs, editor of the Re-corder, took a great dislike to the whole family. In print-ing the name of George AVashington he invariably useda small g and w. He always dubbed Nathaniel had an office then in what now is the Silver Citybuilding. The Rogers brothers, or at least two of them,undertook to chastise Riggs. They waited all day longnear the entrance to Riggs office but the latter hearingthat they had a horsewhip sent home for a revolver. Atnight he went home undisturbed. Soon afterwards Na-thaniel Rogers went to Danbury. He was a manufacturerof silver novelties and reputed to be wealthy. Hervey 46 MEMOIRS. CEPHAS B. ROGERS. MEMOIR 8 47 Rogers went to California during the gold craze, about1849. He was not heard of for years and had beengiven up for dead. Subsequently he returned and livedin Meriden until his death a while ago. Cephas, Gilbert and Wilbur, under the name of C. Rog-ers & Brothers started in a small way to manufacturecoffin hardware. They built up the big shops now knownas Factory H of the International Silver Company. TheRogers Brothers Company was incorporated in the Unit-ed States Silver Company engineered by the Thomascrowd of Xew York. This combination by devious waysobtained enough of the con anon and preferred stock ofthe International Silver Company to control the com-pany.
