Sophie Gengembre Anderson painting, Elaine, oil on canvas, 1870

This picture is inspired by a Lord Tennyson poem. The story revolves around Elaine, a naïve village girl who develops feelings for Sir Lancelot. She dies of unrequited love after he deserts her in favour of Queen Guinevere. In Anderson's painting, a servant is seen rowing Elaine's corpse to Camelot, the home of King Arthur.
