Supernova collapse simulation, showing the turbulent flow and fluid dynamics during the core collapse stage of a supernova. At right is the supernova shock wave (arc) that blows off the outer layers of a massive star when its core collapses. A supernova occurs when a massive star has run out of nuclear fuel, the fusion of which prevents stars collapsing under their own weight. This work is being carried out at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee, USA. The image, published in 2009, is based on simulation data from the GenASiS code.
