St Roche

The view taken in 1828, shows the Church of St Roche (L’Eglise de St Roche) started in 1653 by Louis XIV and Anne of Austria and finished in 1740 by the banker and Comptroller General of Finances, Law. The original designs were by the architect Mercier but finished later by Robert de Cotte. Doric and Corinthian pillars support a triangular pediment. There are signs on the church of the attack on Paris by the troops of the Convention led by Buonaparte. Above the altar are fine paintings by Vien and Doyen. The tombs of the philosopher Maupertius, the horticulturist Lenostre, the two sculptors Anguier Cardinal Dubois, the painter Mignard, the Abbé de l’Epée and Corneille are in the church. The image was drawn by B Ferry under the direction of A Pugin and engraved by Romney
