Gaut in the chair. Charles Parr and Henry Wenzel, both of Glen Cove, were elected as active members. Mrs. W. H. Porter, Glen Cove, was made an honorary member and two petitions for active membership were received. Special prizes for the society's shows were received from the following: A. G. Hodenpyle, of Locust Valley, and Hitchings & Co., New York. John Scheppers & Co., New York, d«nated $50 toward a display of Darwin tulips for next spring. The judges of the monthly exhibits were S. J. Trepess, J. Adler and W. Hutton and their awards were as fol- lows: Twelve hybrid perpetual roses, one variety, F. Honeyman, first; twelve strawberries, Henry Jones, first; vase of twelve peonies, mixed, Henry Jones, first. Honorable mention was awarded to the following: H. Gaut, for three vases of sweet peas; H. Boiettcher, for one vase of sweet peas, mixed; H. Boettcher, for vase of Aquilegia chrys- antha; W. Gray, for bunch of aspara- gus. A certificate of culture was awarded to John Scheppers & Co. for a collection of peonies. James Duthie, of Oyster Bay, read an interesting and instructive essay on '; Dahlia Culture for Exhibition, Cut- ting for Housework and Garden Deco
