Though this work is not a historical one, it is impossibleto pass over circumstances which have made a deep and ever-lasting impression on the life of the land. Weenen, signifying in Dutch, weeping, was originally acamp or laager of the pioneering Dutch emigrants, who cameinto Natal by way of the Drakensberg. Dingaan at that periodwas supreme ruler in the land. The Dutch having made theirencampment here, were in treaty with him for a cession of. lOGE, LIONS RIVER. sufficient territory to supply their wants. With the treacherywhich, alas, is so prevalent a trait in African aborigines, hetemporised with them, and appeared willing to accede to theirrequest ; but deep in his superstitious mind there lurked a dread 225
