He visitedMadeira, ran through two up-town blocksin Spain, went ashore at Genoa, visitedNaples, Pompeii, Rome, Leghorn, Pisa, andreturned to Genoa. The delightful wickednessof Monte Carlo attracted him for awhile,or was he attracted to Monte Carlo in spiteof the wickedness? At least, he went there,and he tells us of his visit without moralizing. It is almost to be wished that Mr. Howellswould moralize sometimes. A book of aboutthree hundred pages might find space forsomething other than delightful, sparkling,polished chatter, for some slight recognitionof the depths that are very real underneaththe gay and shining surface of life in south-ern Europe.
