Greece, Sounion A sunset over the relics of the Temple of Poseidon. Legend has it that Cape Sounion is the spot where Aegeus King of Athens leapt to his death off the cliff (so giving his name to the Aegean Sea) when he saw a black sail on his son's ship returning from Crete. The earliest reference to Sounion is in the 8th C by Homer, Many Greek heroes are recorded going to their death in storms or being swept out to sea for an age, or being taken prisoner by one eyed Cyclops.
