He served as nurse and laterhead nurse in the German Hospital,from 1891 to 1895, when he was appointed to his present his long continuance in office he has gained a well-earnedreputation as one of the best-informed and most popular officials inthe department. He ranks as first assistant executive officer forthe entire Emeroencv EMERGENCY HOSPITAL SERVICE SAX FRANCISCOS Emergency Hospital Service is universallyrecognized as the best in the country. It is without a rival inequipment, organization and efficiency and has been taken as amodel by other large cities. The department consists of five emergencyhospitals and a detention hospital for the insane. It is presided over byDr. Alanson Weeks, Chief Surgeon, and his assistant executive, ChiefSteward Charles Bucher, who are responsible to a major degree forits upbuilding and efficiency. Their staff is composed of fifteen sur-geons, twenty-one hospital stewards, nine nurses and fifteen am-bulance drivers. The service has five modern motor-driven ambu-lances. During the past fiscal year 29,996 cases were treated and7193 emergency ambulance calls responded to. The first actual Emer-gency Hospital in San Francisco was opened in 1893 in the old CityHall. Four years later the Harbor Emergency Hospital was opened,and in the
