Leaving the harbour, Heimaey, Vestmannaeyjar Islands, southern Iceland.

The lava field from Eldfell, which erupted in 1973, partially blocked the entrance and can be seen on the right. The eruption lasted nearly 5 months and nearly destroyed the town. Almost all the inhabitants were evacuated on the night of 23 January. The island is right on the Reykjanes Ridge or Mid-Atlantic Ridge. A further island formed by a volcano can be seen in the distance.
