TURPENTINE STILL with by-products of creosote, pyro-ligneous acid, etc., produced by the destructive distillation of wood. The blocks of wood are placedin the retort, G, the door onthe right closed, the valve atthe conical end closed, andthe valve above opened. Wa-ter being introduced into thechambers to the level of thegrate bars, fire is appHed, andthe clear white spirit passes invapor by the neck, V, to theworm in the tub C. As soon as it begins to show color, the valveabove is closed, and the valve at the conical end opened, when thevapor passes through the purifier, L, into the chamber, which is sur-rounded by water in the tub D.
