Then there is no doubt that many of the finest of thebindings made for Jean Grolier were Italian. Who designedthem and who boundthem we do not know,but among the earlierexamples there is nodoubt that splendid workcan be found. They mayhave been done in theworkshop of AldusManutius, but it ratherseems that the designswere made by one man,and I think it is notunlikely that Grolierhimself may have alwaysgiven the general ideaof the decoration hewanted. The later bindingsmade for Grolier arecuriously inferior, andsometimes in calf. Theearlier and finer bind-ings are in morocco, which is sometimes marbled.
